Facts
Capybara facts
A few things worth knowing about the world's largest rodent. All accurate, all worth a second read.
Biggest rodent around
Capybaras are the world's largest living rodents. A full-grown adult can weigh up to about 150 pounds (66 kg).
South American native
They call South America home, from the grasslands of Brazil to the wetlands of Venezuela and beyond.
Born swimmers
Capybaras are semi-aquatic and excellent swimmers. Webbed feet and eyes on top of their heads keep them at home in the water.
Better together
They live in social groups, often of 10 to 20 and sometimes more. There is safety (and napping) in numbers.
A very scientific name
Their scientific name is Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, which roughly means "water hog" in Greek.
They talk a lot
Capybaras communicate with whistles, chirps, purrs, and barks. A whistle can mean danger, and a purr can mean all good.
